About the Crew

We are a team of mysterious pirates who will rule the seven seas.

Fresh paint. Clear skies. Unknown waters.

The Round Eye Pirates set sail on July 2026 — a FIRST Tech Challenge team charting its course from Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. We are a young crew, but the sea is the same one every team crosses.

Nautical spirit meets engineering: every build is a ship, every match a crossing, and every failure a lesson learned at sea. One eye fixed on the horizon, the other on the field.

Like the crew of One Piece, nobody can quite work us out — and that's exactly how we like it. We don't take ourselves too seriously; we just build robots, tell tall tales, and have a lot of fun doing it.

Ship’s Log — Day 1, July 26, 2026.

The hull is laid and the crew is mustered. What began as an empty table and a stack of catalogs is now a machine that rolls, turns, and answers to our hands. The first season is a story we are writing as we go.

Ship’s Log — Day 2, August 5, 2026.

Rumors drift through the galley: a new hand is said to be joining the crew. The name stays off the books for now, but an empty bunk has been made ready below decks.

Ship’s Log — Day 3, August 11, 2026.

The rumors have company. A second hand is said to have climbed aboard, still unnamed and unconfirmed — two shadows where there was one. Both bunks are made, both names stay off the books until the ink dries.

Entry No. 003 — September 5, 2026

A new voice joins the ship’s chorus — Emily Deitch climbs aboard, and the crew grows by one more hand.

Earlier this week, on the third of September, the Round Eye Pirates dropped anchor at the Foxbyte fort in Napier. It was our first parley with a sponsor, and the first time the whole crew stood in one place, one room, one moment — all hands together on the same deck.

Practice is set to weigh anchor on the thirteenth of September, when the crew will gather to begin the season’s true work. The sails unfurl; the adventure begins.

The Maiden Voyage Begins
A crew of rookie sailors gathers on the Hawke’s Bay shore with a blank logbook, a pile of parts, and little idea of the storms ahead. We raise the Round Eye Pirates flag, commit to our first FTC season, and set sail — one robot, one lesson, one match at a time.
